The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) deprecates the closure of Libya Al-Wataniya and Libya Al-Rasmia channels on Tuesday, August 19, following the authorities’ request from the Nilesat to halt transmission of them, as they are being taken over by the Islamists.

The Libyan authorities have requested from the Nilesat to suspend the transmission of ‘Libya Al-Wataniya’, which had been under the control of the provisional government, and ‘Libya Al-Rasmia’, which was the voice of parliament. Both heads of parliament and government in Libya have called for halting the transmission of the two channels on account of their support to the militias of Misrata city, according to the concerned authorities’ statements.

“The closure of two channels by the Libyan authorities is an egregious violation of the freedom of expression. Additionally, such a matter leads to sever consequences and influences the situation in Libya, which is already suffering a crisis.

ANHRI urges the Libyan authorities to re-open the two channels that they had been shut down, to promptly suspend their violations against the media professionals and journalists and to provide a free climate that permits the media work with no restrictions.
